From the beaches and marshes of the Chesapeake Bay to the gentle hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Virginia for Gardeners. In Spring, Virginia's highways explode with a delicate, yet vibrant, flower displays which embellish the median strips and the sides of the roads. In April, Virginia's renowned Garden Tour takes place as garden clubs across the state host tours of noteworthy public and private gardens.
Virginia for History Buffs. Every school child knows the significance Virginia has played in US. History. From John S. Mosby and his Mosby Raiders to Mount Vernon and Williamsburg, Virginia is full of historic sites. Chronicling the birth of our nation with sites significant during colonial times, to the war for Independence and the civil war there are museums and monuments for every interest.
Virginia for Horse Lovers. Aside from its vastly colorful history, Virginia is also most notable for its elegant horse country. The countryside is extensively celebrated for its thrilling foxhunts and steeplechases. In spring and summer, one may visit Great Meadows for Twilight polo, point-to-point races, as well as the Virginia Gold Cup and the International Gold Cup. Also the charming town of Upperville annually hosts the famous Upperville Horse Show, a first rate equestrian event featuring world-class competition. The rolling hills and lush woods of the Virginian horse country are an ideal destination for any tourist or resident alike who is easily attracted to the equestrian life style.
Virginia for Country Drives & Wines. The majestic Virginian countryside plays host to gourmet farmers' markets galore. World-class antiques can be found in many of the picturesque towns from Boyce and Millwood to Strasburg and Woodstock. Their merchandise ranging from American Colonial antiques to 16th Century French Antiques. Beside the quaint shops, there are several true Virginian gems tucked among the deep-rooted farms and extensive orchards, such as privately owned restaurants and inns. For those who have a taste for fine wines, the Virginia Wineries Festival is held each spring. Along many highways and byways signs direct you to some of Virginia's finest wineries such as Naked Vineyards, Piedmont, Oasis and Veramar, may of which are open for public tasting.
Virginia for the Outdoor Enthusiast. For those who enjoy and find thrills in the rustic and outdoorsy life style, Virginia is chockfull of activities. One such attraction, is the world renowned Apalachian Trail which follows the Blue Ridge Mountains with access at many points for hiking and camping. The famed trail draws hiking enthusiasts from around the world to hike from Maine to Georgia while passing through the awe-inspiring Virginian panorama. Another activity can be found in Font Royal, the world's Canoeing Capital, where there are many opportunities for white water rafting along the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers.
Perhaps the finest time to be in Virginia is during the fall when the magnificent crimson and umber colors give way to amazing vista that remained hidden during the spring and summer. To add to the gay and lively feelings that envelop Virginia in the fall, the myriad of orchards throughout the northern portion of the state host harvest festivals as the apples begin to ripen. It is truly a marvelous and spectacular time in to be in Virginia.
